inherited a bunch of coins but these two stood out. I'm wondering if they're real. They were in an attic for at least 20 years, so not originating from ebay. I saw a thread about fake cobs from China, made to look like they were in a shipwreck, however all those fakes look very non-circular, while these still show some circularity. I believe the 8R is supposed to be 37mm diameter, and these definitely are slightly smaller but appear like the edges were squashed inward.

The 8R from 1745 has the following characteristics:
weight 14g
diameter 32-35mm
thickness 1.6mm (thicker at some edges up to 2mm)

And this is what the coin is supposed to look like:

The 8R from 1618-1621 has the following characteristics:
weight 9g

Here is the website someone pointed me to about fake cobs. Like I said, most of them are non-circular. Although these look a bit like the example #FC53637 from 1610F?

The 2nd one which you have a suspicion about being fake doesn't look quite like the picture of the fake. The strike seems stronger, which seems to be evident at the striped part of the shield really popping out, where on the weak one it seems weak. I'm also seeing what seems to be the bottom of an "I" on the right side of the shield in the 2nd one, which doesn't match up with the "8" of the fake one. However, I'm no expert, just putting in my 2 cents

Also, don't put your fingers on the face of the coin to hold them, because it gets stuff like oil and fingerprints on them. Hold them on the edge!

Both are tourist trinket replicas - these types and similar (such as the ubiquitous 1736 Lima 8 escudos and 1760 Mexico 8 Reales with right-side "die crack") have been sold by tourist area shops, historical replica vendors, etc. for 40-50 years now).

Pieces of this ilk are really more "tribute" coins than true replicas (let alone "forgeries") as they are not nearly accurate.
