This is off topic and I wasn't sure what forum to post it in.. I'm interested in a item for sale on ebay and for a little extra cash (so I can increase my bid), thought I would sell this 384 gram .925 silver owl on a local website.. This is the first time I'm selling a item on the net since closing my ebay Store in April 2006.. Since I know nothing on Silver Items other then Coins, I'm not sure if this would sell for Spot after I cut the Owl open to verify it is Silver, or if there is a premium if sold "As Is" without cutting it open.. The bottom has felt on it, and the last time I removed felt from a silver piece, the felt did not want to come off & it wasn't pretty.. I divide the 384 grams by 31.1 and get 12.35 troy ounces, x .925 = net 11.42 ounces x spot.

Take it to a pawn shop. They should at least be able to tell you if it's solid silver without cutting it open.

I'd put it on ebay or let a friend with an ebay account do it. A lot of people have obsessions with owls. You might get double spot or more. If you need quick cash though try Craigslist or maybe the bst here as a PM item and ask full spot. But whatever you do don't cut it open!

Or take it to a few coin shops. You would get closer to spot of not almost full spot from the right shop with an ebay account that knows they can get a premium for it. Heck. I know a dealer that might give you close to.spot if you pay for shipping. I can ask him if you like

yea I would not damage it. I think it is worth more than spot, to someone.. you could also have a pawn store or coin store verify it is actually sterling, with an acid test(where it won't be seen)..

Most dealers are not going to pay near spot, because melters pay back spot when buying from the dealers.
I think dealers might pay somewhere around 60 to 70 percent of spot. Pawn shops would pay even less.
Maybe it is different in other areas.
As others suggested take it to a couple local shops, see what they offer. Then try to get more than they offer online.

Quote: A lot of people have obsessions with owls. Yep. Married to one. If it has a hallmark or designer's initials, it might be even more collectable -- part of a series or something. It's pretty cute.

I would not cut it open either.
I think it has value above the silver content and would try to sell it as a collectible. Maybe a consignment type antique store?

Thanks for the comments.. I think I'll remove the felt on the bottom and see if there's a manufacturer's mark, plus I can drill a hole to verify its silver..

There are several Sterling Silver owls that are quite valuable. Until you know for sure what that is do not damage it in any way.
I did a quick search but could not find this exact one. You may want to show that to a Jeweler or high end antique dealer before you get rash.
It could be that it is worth only melt, like a holed 1944 Merc, but it could also be like drilling a hole through a 1916-D.

Agreed. No drill no cut no nothing. Its marked. If You want to remove the felt to see if there's a maker's Mark or stamp go ahead but treat this like a value coin. Find a jeweler around you with an xrf if really need to be sure

Agree with everything Cascade has said... I would guess this piece would get a strong premium over spot if offered in the right venue, as long is it was not damaged...

To contradict someone further up I think trade will pay spot for it (or very close to spot) this way they have a free bet...they can marknit up and possibly make a decent amount of money and if it doesn't sell they can always get their money back.
You don't need to cut it open to find out if its silver inside, thats what Archemedes "Eureka!" was all about. (Water displacement and/or specific gravity can tell you what you need to know)
An unusual and interesting piece, I'd take a chance on it if you were local.

Just took a few more photos when I removed (without damage) about 50% of the felt & looking at it with a UV light.. Also need to take updated photos of some older US Silver Coins that I'm going to list for sale here on CCF.. Not sure if I should sell the Silver Dollars as a separate lot (22 Morgan's and 8 Peace dollars) or add it to the other Silver (Dimes to Halves).. I hope to post it by 5pm here..

I tried posting this yesterday when my ticker started acting up again, forcing me to stop what I'm doing & try lowering the ole blood pressure.. Anyway, I use a black light on this and noticed a lime green look that I thought was silver plating that had worn off & exposed the underneath.. I went to shave a small amount of the green off (in photo 2) and found silver under it.. To verify the purple color of the Silver under the UV light, I checked a antique Silver piece under the same light and it also showed purple color.. I'm thinking this is .925 silver and will be listing it for sale here on CCF. I also decided to go through my "Not So Junk, Junk Silver" that I set aside a few years back when Silver Spot was around $45.00, and sell when the Magic Number $50 come around.. I'm going to list 2 of the 90% Coin Silver Lots also, that will expire Saturday.. I seen Silver Spot was $16.73 a ounce.
