I came into some Ike dollars and know little to nothing about grading. I am interested in getting some feedback on some. This is a proof example in a vinyl sleeve and you can see the green liquid looking substance...I wanted to know what he grade was on this and whether I needed to do anything to further care for this coin without damaging it.

Thanks in advance!

Oops...still trying to upload photos...Sorry.

Hi Fender,
Welcome to the forum!
Well, as you noticed this coin has a bad case of PVC. The first order of business is to remove it from that flip and give it a bath in pure acetone. I suggest you use a small glass container; acetone will dissolve many plastics. Be careful as acetone is extremely flammable. Soak the coin in the acetone for a few minutes, then transfer it to a new container with fresh acetone. It may help to swirl the container gently during each rinse. Repeat this until all traces of green are gone. Then give it a final rinse with fresh acetone and let it air-dry. Hopefully that will prevent any further damage. Then put it in a proper coin holder, like a mylar flip or 2X2 with no PVC plastic content.

The coin looks like an easy Proof-65 cameo (or better) before the PVC exposure. Unfortunately chances are it has already suffered enough damage to lower that grade. Please post some after-treatment photos for us; it will be a useful learning experience!

I was concerned it may have damaged the coin. I'll get some today if I get a chance and post some more photos. Any suggestions on handling? Rubber surgical gloves maybe? Thanks!

Acetone will attack vinyl gloves and probably latex rubber as well. It tends to dry out your skin with repeated contact but otherwise isn't all that hazardous. The main risk is fire so make sure you aren't close to any source of heat. If you browse older posts on the forum you will find lots of discussion about using acetone.

I'd just pour the acetone directly from the can into your glass containers and pour the used stuff into a waste glass when you're done. You can just leave the open waste container outside and the acetone will evaporate quickly.

After your final rinse just pour off as much acetone as you can, then gently tip the coin onto a soft paper towel. It will be dry and OK to handle in just a few seconds.

Oh, and make sure you use pure acetone. Nail polish remover (for example) is acetone with a bunch of other chemicals and would be terrible for your coins.

OK, about to give this a shot and if possible, will post pics tonight. I actually have the whole series of IKE in proof and clad and if memory serves me, most of the proofs have some level of green stuff...
