Betty, better pics would really help, but the bottom serif on the MM does not look correct to me.

Jim... Just wondering why it does't look alright to you, What do you see ?

I'm looking for one of these and I'd like to be careful.

Thanks, SHAFTA9a

According to the PCGS grading and counterfeit guide there are 4 different obverse dies for the S-VDB and the mintmark position varies between them. However, the mintmarks are identical on all 4 dies and they have a consistent "squarish" shape. The mintmark on Bettycakes' coin doesn't look good. The bottom curve hangs too low and the end is not tight against the center curve the way it should be. Based on this photo I'd say it's a fake.

Shafta, people have been known to take an "S" off of another coin and glue it on an 1909 VDB. Under a scope it would probably be evident, but Machinists can do amazing things. The Way I have had the MM explained to me on a 1909-S VDB is that the ends of the serifs should be flat and parallel to each other, not rounded as Betty's appears on the lower serif. The upper serif seems to appear correct. Closer pics would be a great help. Hadleydog's pic shows this and how the flat portion of the serifs should be more or less in line with the loop of the "S" on each side.
