I found this while going through some old boxes and dont know much about coins. I since have read many articles from many sites, and still dont think I know too much. Anyway I'm just wondering if anyone can give some advise/info about my coin. As far as the coin itself the one thing Ive noticed is that when looking at it straight on it has a nice silver color, but when you put it at a slight angle, it has a gold color that is even throughout the coin, front and back. Ill put an extra pic to show this. Other than that it looks like it has surface dirt on it and needs to be cleaned? Not by me though.

Hello and welcome to Coin Community!

It may be the pics, but your coin looks like it has already been cleaned in the past (many have, so don't be discouraged). The details look pretty sharp and I would guess the grade at around AU55. According to Red Book, that puts the value around $40-45.

I strongly recommend NOT cleaning this coin. I believe the gold coloring to be the coin retoning after the past cleaning.

Nice coin! that is exactly how I started collecting awhile back, stumbled upon one myself. Anyways I would agree that you have an AU or about uncirculated coin. There is a bit of flashiness that could quite possibly indicate a cleaning at some point. Coins that are in this state of preservation are often called "sliders" becouse they so closely resemble uncirculated coins. None the less it looks at least from the photos that it was cleaned carefully. I do see a couple of hairlines, or they may well be bag marks. A true unc coin will have uniform lustre that is distibuted evenly on the coins surface. As far as value is concerned my RedBook lists an i891 in AU for around $40.

I have to agree with Susan. The coin has been cleaned but is a nice piece for your collection. Va;ue about $40.00 give or take a bit.

You got some decent advice here, however, the Red Book as others have been quoting prices from that source, are absolute "HIGH" retail values. A typical dealer would pay you $15-$18 for your coin. That would take into account the cleaning that it has seen.
A simular coin would have a normal retail value of around $25

I agree with the sentiments and opinions of the previous posters, but it's very hard for me to let a Morgan topic go by without comment. [:p]

Yes, it appears it has already been cleaned and probably harshly with an abrasive. It appears to have been lightly circulated from what appears to be wear on Liberty's hair above the ear, but this could also be a function of a weak strike; there's too much reflected light on the reverse to really make an assessment. It's high Almost Uncirculated at the least, but from a market viewpoint, the cleaning devalues it considerably. However, a coin such as this makes a great start for a Morgan collection; a coin is a coin and fills an empty hole in a folder and someone who wants a representative collection will not care so much about its technical condition as long as the date is not obliterated. Too often among some of us too-serious perfectionist collectors, we ignore those who just want a particular coin to fill in a blank (vis a vis, some stamp collectors don't mind if a stamp has been cancelled). Cleaned, circulated, or not, it's a nice coin.

If it were me, I'd keep it and build around it.

Oh I'm definitely keeping it. It was given to me by my grandfather and grandmother. That and the lincoln head cent blue book. Unfortunatley I think I used some of the cents as toys when I was young...all the good ones of course. Finding this coin has definitely turned me on to coin collecting.

Wow, I appreciate that. Some other forums I subscribe to would have probably been making fun of me by now. I'm sure this wont be the last question I have since I'm still trying to learn quite a bit. Thanks!

Hi oo7ral

Welcome to the Forum !!!

The info given on your coin is all good!!

You may want to pick up a book or 2 to help with the learning curve !! the RedBook is a good book for mintage numbers and Metal compositions of US coins. with some interesting reading .But as has been said the prices are a high retail and good as a reference but not for market value !!

Glad to have you here !!
