I just purchased this Kushan tetradrachm, which I believe to be struck in the name of Kanishka I in ca. 128-52CE. The obverse appears to depict the king making a sacrifice at an alter, and the reverse depicts the wind god Vedo. Is this in fact the proper identification? Thanks! Yep, Archraz, that's the correct attribution. And a very nice example for the type. Good pick-up.

Bob L & moxking - Thanks for the help! I actually paid $25 (with shipping) for this coin. Do you two think that I did OK? (I'm still fairly new to collecting Kushan coins and I hope that I didn't overpay).

Very nice example with the Kushan Wind God VADO (WADO). Excellent price also.

Yes, really good deal for $25. As Ron and I have lamented on this board, Kushan prices have been creeping up over the last decade or so - especially the tets. While some are still available for the price you paid, they would typically have less detail. You did quite well. Congrats.

echizento & Bob L - Great! Thanks for the help! I'm glad to hear that I got a nice example for a decent price.
Out of curiosity, why do you think that prices have gone up in recent years? Are more people in India collecting them? I have found that Indian coins from nearly every time period have gone up quite a bit over the past five to ten years.

Quote: why do you think that prices have gone up in recent years? I think Ron is to blame. You know, he's really been promoting non-Western coinage on this site for a long time. The world is listening. Seriously, I think that, as much as they may appreciate Greek and Roman coinage, a number of ancients collectors have increasingly been looking east for new collecting territory (and challenges). I don't think VCoins had nearly as many Eastern empires offerings a decade ago, as compared to now. It's still nowhere near as extensive as the Western stuff, of course. But, with the increased interest has come, accordingly, increased prices. However, there are still plenty of bargains to be had for patient and smart shoppers, whether via VCoins, ebay, or wherever - Your Kanishka is the proof of that.

Thanks to the research by Pankaj Tandon and Coin India the importance that these coin types have played in ancient history and their links to other parts of the ancient world have been brought to attention of collectors. Also the War in Afghanistan has drawn attention to that part of the world where a great deal of these coins have been found. Also I think the collectors like myself have realized that there is more to collect than the classical Greek and Roman coinage, there is a whole area in the East that has been overlooked.

I agree with Bob. Several of my recent purchases have been inspired by Ron.
