Have this 1973 quarter that caught my eye because the rim looked like a silver coin but the date did not make since. At closer look the rim has what looks to be copper spots at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Additionally on the reverse there is a darker edge starting above the "U" in United and widening across the top of States of America and fading out just past the final "A" in America. It looks like it would have left the mint this way but don't know if this is one of a kind or worth anything other than .25. Hopefully my images are good enough to see what I pointed out. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks!
After looking closer your explanation makes since but my question would be, Why would someone do this? why with a 1973? I've heard of this on the HSN but typically newer coins.
If you stay here awhile you will see plenty of examples of "created rarities". Some of them make no sense at all, but many were made specifically to fool people who don't know coins.
