I'm thinking about getting some America the Beautiful proof quarters, but I was wondering, is there much of a difference in eye appeal/aesthetics between silver and clad? This wouldn't any kind of an investment, it's just for my personal collection...

Fine Silver proofs will always be more visually appealing than clad I would think

I agree with trout, the Ag proofs are much more attractive. If you want to convince yourself, buy one of each, clad and silver, of the same issue.

The non Silver proofs are nice But I think that the Silver coins being a PM are treated with more respect at the Mint.

I would also have to vote for the silver Proofs. I will get my CAPS album out and post some pictures later. They are really a nice set to have. Same with the ATB's.

I also like the looks of silver proofs over clad proofs. But then I like them all. While we wait for some pictures of Debrajc ATB's, I hope it is ok to post a sample of State Quarters, proofs on the right.

Good advice to simply just compare. Just go to your LCS - you don't even need to buy to see the difference!

Moxking ... I do like to ..try and motivate others in what can be collected. I think many collectors that say they don't want to collect State Quarters, have not seen a higher grade set. The cool part about modern sets is that most can be done in high grades at reasonable prices. At least that is my opinion ...

Silver proofs over clad all the way.
Although, most clad proofs are very beautiful also. It is hard to go wrong.

I am going to buck the trend here.
My thoughts are that Proofs and Mint Sets should reflect the circulating coinage, like they were originally. Therefore, Proof Sets should be clad for the dime and quarter, zinc for the penny and copper-nickel for the Nickel. If the Dollar and Half Dollar aren't being minted for circulation then they should be included in Proof and Mint Sets. This extends to Mint Marks as well. Proof Sets should come from Philly and Denver. Let SF make the collector crap.
I am not a fan of what I refer to as Legal Tender Collector Items (LTCI). LTCI, like halves, dollar coins, "S" and "W" mint-marked items, the various gold pieces, commemoratives, etc. are fine if you want to buy them (and I do if it interests me) but they are not indicative of circulating coins which is the Mints primary responsibility.
Proof and Mint Sets should only contain coins that are minted for circulation for that year. Have "Special Mint Sets" or something for the non-circulating stuff.
Aesthetically however, silver looks better than clad...

GR58 to the rescue! Thanks I tried to take some pics yesterday and had forgotten how hard proof coins are to photograph. Plus with your set he can see the proof and silver proof side by side. I will try again later today. And I do think the clad proofs are VERY nice...I just think the silver ones are just a wee bit nicer.

I like them both. The contrast between them in a completed album is very appealing to me.
