Hi all,

Apologies for my ignorance, but is this a 5 or 10 ruble coin, or maybe something else? I realize it is quite worn but would be appreciate of anyone hazarding an estimate as to its grade. I also apologize for the lack of focus in parts of the images....I need to work on those skills.

The coin is about 2.4 cm in diameter and has a mass of 6.3 g.

Thanks in advance.

It's a 5 ruble; the size and weight appear to be about right, so it might actually be real.

No idea what the grade is, sorry. (As a wild guess, I'd say VG-F.)

This has many of the tell tale signs of a cast coin - loss of detail, blending between the fields and elements, and granular surfaces being the most obvious.

However, my knowledge of this coin type is very limited and perhaps we have someone with a better knowledge who may chime in.

I don't know Russian gold much at all, but from experience with Spanish gold (often mounted), this looks like an ex-jewelry piece that has "sweated" a moderate amount.

There are definitely (removed) mount marks at 3 and 6 on the bust side... and 3 and 6 on the crest side... and probably also at the other two expected spots.

Thanks for your comments, moxking and realeswatcher. If I send this coin off for grading/evaluation, any recommendations as to the most appropriate service, NGC, other?
