Assuming that you are mostly looking at U.S. coins here are a few books:
PCGS Official Guide to Coin Grading and
Counterfeit Detection by Dannreuther
Detecting Counterfeit and Altered U.S. Coins by J.P. Martin (
ANA correspondence course)
Counterfeit Detection: A Reprint from the Numismatist VolumeII
United States Gold
Counterfeit Detection Guide by Fivaz
Counterfeit Mis-struck and Unofficial U.S. Coins by Taxay
Numismatic Forgery by Larson
Standard Catalog of United Statees Altered and Counterfeit Coins by Durst
Bill Fivaz's
Counterfeit Detection Guide
The
TPG websites often have have articles and other material on detection. The Numismatist typically has an article on counterfeits.
Importantly, look at a lot of coins. Go to coin shows and auction previews. Books will take you so far, the rest will come from actual experience and getting to know what a genuine coin looks like. The world's fair of money will be returning to Philadelphia in 2018 and often times there are lectures and courses on this subject. The
ANA offers week long classes during the summer on a host of numismatic topics including
Counterfeit Detection.
