Hello!

First post on this site, so hoping someone can assist.

Found this coin in a car I bought a while back.

Please can someone let me know what it is,and if possible if it is worth anything?

Thanks!

Martin

This is a love token. It is definitely worth something; this is a brisk collecting area. I would definitely snap this up if it came my way. I can't say much about the value as I do not know the market well enough.

If you have the weight and diameter we could have a good guess as to the host coin.

Someone who knows Dutch can give a translation.

Thanks for your replies. How exciting!

I'll see if I can get it weighed; I'm guessing I'll need some sensitive scales!

The coin is 3cm across.

Hello.

I have finally got it weighed. It weights 10g and is exactly 31mm in diameter.

Popping that into google comes up with a match for a Dutch Gulder, 1795-1800, as the host coin.

Any ideas on value?

Thanks!

I would probably put it on ebay at around £75 and be very disappointed if it didn't do better than that.

Not a shabby find at all then!

Thanks for the response; I would rather this went to a collector who really appreciates this type of coin (although I do appreciate the quality of the engraving, especially from so long ago!), than it just sitting on a shelf in my living room!

Other than Google, can anyone else confirm that the coin identification is correct?

A love token is just a name for an engraved coin or token, so this is a love token technically, but it could be something more.

With the resemblance to a French officer of the early 19th century I looked up the date in regards to Napoleon. The Battle of Battle of San Massimo and Santa Lucia occurred on April 20, 1797.

Could it have a connection?

I know it's been a while, but just to let you all know it is on ebay.

I have made it available worldwide, and has 2 days to go. Hopefully it'll go to someone who will fully appreciate it :)

Thanks again for your help guys, much appreciated.

Guild membership token.

Kryn Dirks 't Gilt gek't / Krijn Dirks het Gilt gekocht.

The y is umlauted, old way of writing the letter "ij"; therefore, the name is now spelled Krijn Dirks. This token would have been proof that Krijn Dirks was a paid member of a particular guild.

Look up "Gildepenning" for more information.

Way to go Mpkinguk, I caught the last 5 minutes of your auction ... that's all it takes, two keen bidders!

Congratulations. I expected it to end up at +/- £120. Very good result.
