I recently went quarter hunting and hit a lucky strike - a roll that had only 6 Canadian quarters and the rest being American, which is great due to the difference between the two dollars.

But I want to know your luck! How often do you find silver quarters, proofs, etc in Canadian quarter hunting?

Very true Bigchip22. Pretty soon it'll be rare to see even a nickel quarter in circulation

It already is quite rare to see nickel quarters. I only come across them in general circulation every few weeks or so. They are slightly more common in rolls, where there is around 7 nickel quarters in every 10 rolls on average.

Hi Mike, I think the better question is to ask yourself these 2 questions:

1) how much time am I willing to commit to this?

2) how much money am I willing to commit to this?

the last 4 years I decided I was going big, I committed $7000 to use, I was going through at times $7000 a week in quarters alone (just over $10K a week of all denoms). I also did dimes. This commitment meant I needed to go to the bank(s) everyday, and everyday I was dumping as well on average about $2000 a day.

Oh, and the time this took to go through, I work full time mon-fri, so from 4:30 pm I would drive to my first bank, pick up coins, then maybe a second, then on to my dump bank. repeat during the week. on Saturday, out the door at 7:30 to hit up TD (open at 8am) and then proceed onto about 27 more banks through till 4pm. spend Saturday evening and night going through coins. sleep in on sunday but ready to get out and go for more but about 11. then repeat the cycle.

Did I find us$ yes, upwards of $2000 for every 3 months or so.

Did I find silver, yes, the first year it was about 1 silver quarter for every $600 searched, dropping down to last year 1 silver quarter for every $2400 searched.

I did find 2 silver proof coins from the 1999-2000 series

So what is YOUR commitment level?

ace ftw
My commitment is to finish the following:
-Grade 9
-Grade 10
-Grade 11
-Grade 12
-Post-Secondary Studies

Yes, ace ftw, I would love to do as much as you have done, but studies get in the way.

On top of that, my dad believes it's a waste of time. Like, come-on! I need something to keep myself out of trouble!

good luck in school. I wish I had kept up with my coin collection when I was in my teens, I could have kept a look out for 1991 quarters.

Another thing you might possibly do to get more coins is to ask your relatives/friends/family nicely if they have any old paper money and coins they might be willing to trade or give to you. This worked for me years ago when I was young.

I had not updated my albums for about 20 years so in 2013 started roll hunting. Because I was looking for about 1990 to present, it was quite successful. Since then I have been picking up a few rolls once a week. Since most of my modern (post 1967) collection is circulated I look to find better coins of existing ones.

Very little in silver finds. Maybe four silver quarters and twelve dimes since 2013.

I save U.S. coin. About a year ago I had my wife pick up ten rolls of quarters at a bank in a small town 35 min. south of us. To my surprise 6 of the 10 rolls were complete U.S. quarters!

The banks I deal with are 5 min. away so not a big investment in time. I probably waste the most time standing in line but if they are swamped I do not go in. I might drop of 10 rolls each of Loonies and Quarters at one branch and then go over to the other and pick up ten rolls each of Nickels, Dimes, and Toonies. It passes the time while I watch the news or wait for the next period of the hockey game to start.

With dimes I know that there's silver left. I once even found 3 silver dimes in only $20s worth!
