I am in the process of trying to clean out my desk to see exactly what I have and ran across the following:

1971 Eisenhower in a sealed cellophane envelope with what appears to be a blue plastic medallion that states: "Eisenhower uncirculated Silver dollar"

My questions are:

1: should I remove the coin from the packaging so I can put in my Dansco album?

2: If I do remove the coin from the packaging will it affect the value if any.

3: If the blue medallion if correct I believe that the coin is at 40% silver. Correct

4: Would I be better off keeping everything as is and putting it away for safe keeping?

Thanks for the comments

1. Yes. It is exactly what I did for my Dansco.

2. No. Although some may pay a premium to have one in the OGP, the actual coin's value is unaffected.

3. Yes. This is the original government packaging for the uncirculated 40% silver Eisenhower dollars.

4. No. If you want to build a Dansco you will be happier if you put the coin there.
Rest in Peace

Probably within our life times it's unlikely that the still-sealed government issued packs, as you describe, will gain much premium simply because there are so many of them out there.

It won't hurt to put that coin in your Dansco and feel perfectly fine about doing so.

If you need one for your Dansco .. then break it out.

Cello is the 40% UNC Ikes - Blue envelope
Hard plastic holder is the 40% Proof - Brown box

Awesome pics again GR58!

Yes, I would open it for my album. I opened several for mine.
But I might someday put a set together OGP. It's been on my mind lately.

Jbuck it's always great to get an answer that explains why someone would do something.

I think that I will be keeping the coin in the OGP for the time being. I'm still assembling the Ikes that I need for my album. So in packaging will be preserving the coin in all its beauty.

In the meantime I'll keep on accumulating Ikes. Whenever I get a chance to add (no matter the condition) to my stash.

Brown and blue '71 Ikes were going to make us all rich, so we bought them by the dozen.

It's 45 years later and they still sell for about the original issue price. The problem is that the dollar is worth something like 25%...

For me, the decision to remove coins from their original packaging comes down to identity. I have proof ikes cracked out of their original package, but they are still proof coins, and can be positively identified. I also have a mint set that I won't cut up because once I remove those coins from their packaging I no longer have identifiable mint set coins. In your case, that Ike can be positively identified as a 40% silver Ike even without its packaging, if it was mine it would already be in my album...

Leaving it in the packaging for now makes sense to me, but I say don't be afraid to cut it out when the time comes to fill your album!

And silver is 10X higher than it was back then.

There is nothing wrong with waiting to put them all into an album at one time. This is what I am doing with the Presidential dollars.
