I know I said no more coins today,But I got bored so I took these pictures and am wondering what causes this kind of damage? I really think this isn't something that occurred during the minting process,But am curious as to the cause. Thanks for looking and have a good one!

I'm going with zinc rot. The "zincolns" deteriorate quickly.

WOW! I suppose the 82 pennies I'm holding onto aren't zinc. That really amazes me. Thanks for the info!

Some of the 82s were copper (3.1g) and some were zinc(2.5g).

Somehow it seems disrespectful to Lincoln to allow coins with his likeness to become so gross because we continue to make such garbage.

Moxking,I don't want to sound disrespectful,But your comments seem just that. If your not going to be nice to people that are just coming into this hobby please don't respond!

I think moxking is criticizing the Mint's decision to go with Zinc Alloy coins - not directing his comments at you

The coin may have been pierced with a straight pin and after the plating is split, then oxygen get to the zinc and it begins to rot away. Spend it. In time it will eventually look like a copper colored 'Hershey's" kiss wrapper.
