I'm going with zinc rot. The "zincolns" deteriorate quickly.

WOW! I suppose the 82 pennies I'm holding onto aren't zinc. That really amazes me. Thanks for the info!

I just noticed the hair in the pictures,My apologies. My dog is shedding right now and it seems to be everywhere!

Somehow it seems disrespectful to Lincoln to allow coins with his likeness to become so gross because we continue to make such garbage.

The coin may have been pierced with a straight pin and after the plating is split, then oxygen get to the zinc and it begins to rot away. Spend it. In time it will eventually look like a copper colored 'Hershey's" kiss wrapper.
