the reason I noted this as a cleaned or lightly polished coin is that when looking at the scratches on the reverse across the bell and below it, they are consistent with with a long swipe with a cloth or something abrasive and are far to long to have come from just banging up against a coin where you would see short nicks or scratches. I think if you look along the bottom of the obverse you will some discoloration. from my observation I think they were attempting to remove that. looking closely at the reverse you can still see some remnants of that same discoloration across the bottom half of the coin exactly where the swipe/scratches are located. look at the cheek. these marks are from contact with other coins. very different from the others.

I apologize, I'm still learning, but I see what you're saying. So, if I were looking for evidence of wiping or brushing, there would be multiple hairlines in the same direction and usually not a perfectly straight line? And, they would affect fields and raised elements as opposed to die scratches that would normally be seen only in the fields?

I have a sense that a lot of these coins I have may have been cleaned or at least wiped a long time ago and any help would be appreciated as to identifying what happened.

I'll take a closer look at the color difference you noted because I don't remember seeing that in hand, may be the pics.
