Hi guys Here's my 2nd denarius of the 5 good emperors set I'm collecting, the 15th emperor Antoninus Pius... Interestingly he only received the name Pius on his accession to the throne. Before this he was known as Titus Antoninus. There are 2 reasons given for changing his name....The first is that he compelled the senate to deify his adoptive father Hadrian...The second because he saved senators sentenced to death by Hadrian in his later years. Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161) AR denarius, struck AD 145-161. Rome mint. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP,(Antoninus Augustus Pius Father of the people) laureate head right TR POT COS IIII,(Tribune of the people 4 times Consul) Liberalitas standing left, holding abacus and cornucopiae, LIB IIII across the fields. RIC 155 type 1, RSC 491, BMC 571. I've got a couple of questions I hope you can help me with... 1,On Wild wind they have Liberalitas holding an abacus,on other sites it's described as a money dispensor,tessera/abaciscus,abaculus..What's correct? 2,LIB IIII across the fields..what does this signify? I know LIB stand for generosity but what does IIII mean ...Really generous, extremely generous? Any thoughts on the coin are much appreciated.. . . I'm not into shiny so this coins got a wonderful light matt tone in hand. Not the most detailed coin I know but the overall look I really love and at 35$ not bad. I'm trying to form the whole set for 300$...but with decent looking coins...Nerva is going to be the most difficult to aquire but they are around. Thanks in advance ..Saludos Paul

Very nice coin, Paul. A good pick-up at a good price. I too like the toning, especially since the fields are slightly darker than the raised devices. I also like the subtle flow lines that radiate outward from the obverse portrait. You did quite well. I leave it to our Roman experts to address the questions you pose.

sorry , I forgot your first question : an abacus is a kind of calculator , as Liberalitas -representing the donations to the people- figures on this coin , she holds a cornucopia as symbol of the gifts she is dispensing and in the other hand a calculator . Nice coin. Who are your 5 good emperors ? albert

liberalitas are the presents , the money and the grain the emperors give to the people to be popular . This coin is remenbering the fourth time Antoninus Pius made this kind of donations . albert

Thanks again so it's an abacus ?. My 5 good emperors are Nerva,Trajan,Hadrian,Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Arelius...But I'll probably add Lucius Verus aswell and make it 6......Then I'll do the 5 bad ones! Thanks for your kind words Bob and Spence Saludos Paul

Super coin, Out of the five great emperors of the PAX Roma AP is my favorite. He wasn't a saint but he was a fair and just emperor that put the Roman people before himself.

you can make your collection of the 5 emperors with 4 coins and so save money for a Lucius Verus'coin a denarius of Antoninus Pius , struck at Rome in AD 140 obv: ANTONINUS AUG(ustus) PIUS P(ater) P(atriae) TR(ibunicia) P(otestate) CO(n)S(ul) III (tertius) rev : AURELIUS CAESAR AUG(usti) PII F(ilius) CO(n)S(ul) RIC417 , 16 mm , 3,22 gr , 6 h albert
