Here is a more modern note, the Australian commemorative of the 1788 Botany Bay landings by Captain Cook in HMS Endeavour.

Not my thread, but a recommendation: A quick note explaining the historical scene for those who don't know the story would make this thread much more informative...IMHO

This Spanish 50-Peseta note from 1928 shows a detail from a painting by Diego Velázquez showing the Surrender of Breda. This Dutch city was captured on June 5, 1625, after a long siege, by the Spanish general and Genoese aristocrat Ambrogio Spinola, and was one of the main Spanish victories during the Eighty Years War. The portion of the painting shown on the note depicts General Spinola receiving the keys to Breda from Justinus van Nassau, the Governor of Breda.
