Hi there I'm a newbie from Socal L.A. And I hope you can give me a hand and help me to distinguish my inherited coins if they're an error coin or not.

First, to CCF.

The 1976-D Quarter looks normal for the most part, high points are worn but still in good condition. The only error there may be is a possible RPM (Re-punched Mint Mark). There is one RPM variety listed by Wexler at http://varietyvista.com/09b%20WQ%20...6DRPM001.htm

You can use his images to compare.

The 1909 Lincoln Cent is interesting. In my opinion, it looks like the blank was punched out of a bad section of the copper sheet prior to minting. The reverse shows weakness opposite of the damaged area. This indicates pre-mint damage.

The third coin had me stumped for a while, but Google pulled me out. This is a heavily worn 1936 Philippines Centavo. 1936 was the last year minted. This is not an error just about as worn as a coin can be and still be identified.

The 1983 Lincoln Cent(s) I will have to hold off for another opinion. I have not seen this on any coin before. I will watch the thread to learn more on this myself.

There are many here much more knowledgeable than myself. I hope this sparks an interest in you to begin collecting if you have not. I would say there is not much premium in the coins here, but they are interesting examples.

Thanks for posting

The D mintmark is either a die chip (the point that would have made the center of the D fell off) or a Grease Filled Die - see error-ref.com for definitions of both. Neither are especially valuable, but good eye seeing it.

to CCF. None of the coins are errors, sorry. The quarter is either just worn on the MM or the die broke in the center of the MM,common. The 1909 cent is damage. The 1936 Philippines is just worn. The 1983 is also worn.

Die chip, a Grease Filled Die would remove the mintmark, not fill the center section.

It is a broken post on the quarter. The post is what forms the center of the mint mark. With out it, it looks just like your coin. Unformed on the center of the mint mark. If it were a Struck Through Grease error, the whole mint mark could be affected. But it is not, just a broken post.
