Someone is offering me this 18540 half dollar for $75.00. I don't know any thing about these coins. There are small scratch marks around the surface so I'm thinking it might be a cleaned coin. Is this a good or should I reject this coin? Would you buy it?

The photos are not flattering. To my eye, the coin does not have any "eye appeal" and appears flat and dull (and cleaned.) Perhaps it is the photos, and in hand the coin is prettier.

Only you can decide if this is a coin you want in your collection, but for that price, I think you can find nicer examples of the type. I don't have a book handy, so don't know the value for an 1854 O SLH.

Good luck

From these pictures I would say it has been cleaned, and not tenderly ! I am not real familiar with the series but I am thinking this coin is close to XF details but cleaned so maybe net VF. My greysheet lists this coin at 60$ in VF and 90 in XF. My copy is a couple months old, but should be accurate. IMO you should be able to find a better one for the price- an uncleaned VF, or for a little more and uncleaned XF. Be prepared to wait........until you find one !

I agree with the other posters: VF detail (at best) and low appeal due to an obvious cleaning. I'd maybe consider this a good buy if you could get it for $30 or so. You deserve a much better coin if you're willing to spend $75, IMO.

Thanks for your comments. I can definately wait for a nicer one since I am not a collector of these half dollars. I won't be searching for another, but if a nice one at a good price comes along I may consider. Thanks.
