O-109, R-1, Obv, both 1s are higher than the 8s and Rev, The N is higher than the U in UNITED along with the E & I (in the banner) being to the left of the D & T. IMHO looks to be in XF condition and it was steal for VF money.

The curls are spectacular as are the rims, the only problem is the clasp area but the explanation for that is the strong shield on the reverse. This is the thick part of the coin and one side can suffer at times. There is some luster in the obverse fields believe it or not, but apparently my camera couldn't capture it, alas.

Oh, that one is strong indeed, Ben. What's your opinion of grade? I'm thinking around AU50-ish.

I'd grade it AU50, maybe higher. Strong strike. Do you think it's been cleaned? Hard to tell from pics.

Very nice coin.

I think this pushes AU-50 pretty hard. There are a lot of details on this coin for a strike from the early 19th century. Very nice coin. Digital photography can be pretty unflattering, showing every surface imperfection. The many little dings don't really look like scratches (from cleaning) to me because they curl in random directions, rather than being uniformly parallel. I'd trust Bonedigger's expertise in this series. If he feels it's original (or cleaned) I'll go along with his judgement.

The fact that you picked it up at a VF price is awesome.

Nothing feels better than when you get a great $$ deal for a coin. And the one place to share (or brag) where someone actually appreciates the deal is here.

Definitely AU-50 details; hairlines suggest light rub-down.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in. Much appreciated.

SuperDave, I've marked the flip at XF-45 but honestly think it's closer to 50. There appears to be a very slight (staple?) scratch in the right field coming from the upper ribbon which is there but difficult to see. The rest of the nicks and marks are probably from my camera setting use of 300 pixels per inch because they are not visible using the naked eye.

The coin actually shows some album toning going from dark blue to lt pink and then yellow around the rims.

That point is so important it bears repeating. The problem with posting nice photographs of coins is that the camera sees things that graders don't. These details cannot be taken into account for grading, because you grade a coin by eye, or at most under a 5x loupe. That's how the standards were written, and that's the system we all work under.

As a result, you're likely to undergrade a coin that you only see in photographs, and the better the shot, the lower the grade. All coins have marks which don't show up to the naked eye. It's my dream (my wallet refuses to offer any help) to get a true MS67 Morgan under my lens, for the specific purpose of illustrating this point.
