Newbie checking in:

So, I was at Subway tonight and they have one of those little dishes with "leave a penny, take a penny". I looked down, and, boy oh boy, did I want to fish through the 40-50 cents that were looking back at me. But, I didn't. However, there was one particular cent that looked a bit different from the others, so I nonchalantly flipped it over to reveal some nice wheat bundles. I asked her if I could take it and she said sure. 1944, so I'm pretty happy.

I still want to look at the others, but I'll resist the temptation.

The moral dilemma for all coin collectors, do you reach in the coin dish or don't you. I have been known to ask if it is ok to make change for a quarter and they don't seem to mind that too much. Man do they frown if you just start looking, though.

I don't see any mint mark.

Hey, it's got a couple grimy spots on it. I know you shouldn't clean them, but is there a way to perk it up a little?

Like Jim said, might have been worth it to offer to change it out. Give them a quick look so you can leave four or five rejects in there.

Funny, I just did this same thing at my work. Went to lunch, checked the little tray like I always do and tails up was a wheatie. Looked closer, it was a AU wheatie!! I quicked whipped out my change, tossed a dime in and took the penny. 1953 D in AU/BU shape with a big black spot on the reverse. Nice shape coin, couldnt resist :)

I once saw a silver quarter in a closed tip jar. I told the guy i'd give him 50 cents if he would get it, and he did. Same thing with a Mercury dime at subway. Silver quarter was 1960 AU, Mercury was 1924, VF.

I have always glanced in those trays as I pay for whatever I am buying, and if I see the wheat stalks or an older looking coin I will flip it over. I always tell the cashier I am trading, and leave the pennies I just got in change or a nickel or dime. It is why I almost always pay cash, so I have replacement coins.

I check everyone one I see at the store. And no one has ever said anything to me. I will leave a cent for a cent

Just one more advantage of being old. I have long ago lost that funny thing called pride or whatever they call it when you are afraid to ask for an old coin. Every time a cash register opens I look in carefully and if I see something I like I just blurt out Hey could I have that? I'll give you another coin for it of course. On the way home from a small store one time I noticed several Mercury dimes in my change. I rushed back and asked for all the funny looking dimes if they didn't mind. I ended up with 10 for a dime each.

I've done it for a Wheat cent. Grabbed it, tossed in a zinc one and away I went. Of course I told the cashier I was making a trade and they didn't mind at all. That gives me an idea. Carry a pocket full of zinc cents and trade an even amount for all the copper ones.

Oh !..I like this thread ! ....That has been killing me ! ...I ALWAYS "look" from a distance, but I've never seen one just laying on the top, and I've never "dug through" their tray !....But I'm just dying to ask if I could look through it.....unlike Carl....I think I'm too shy and I don't want the "look" from the cashier ! LoL Ha ha.....
