My LCS recently got an example of this piece, which I am interested in, but given the proliferation of fakes in general:

1. Has this piece been faked much?
2. What should I look for in determining authenticity or not? I cannot get it XRF'd in any reasonable time frame.
3. Would a picture help for any of you? I do not have one now but I could get it-it is still with the LCS.

This is the late, small koban issued right before the Meiji Restoration?

The earlier Koban are apparently heavily faked, even in the correct fineness. I have been keeping an eye on ebay and have noticed a disturbing number in NGC oversized slabs with a "Details - Tooled" grade, or worse an "Uncertifiable" grade. I have only seen one of the later types, but I have no idea how to authenticate.

At any rate, remember that these were made by hand, and any "perfect" examples are reproductions. I would ask your LCS if they would be willing to have the coin authenticated before you buy.

Yes, that was the late small one just before the restoration.

So it sounds like the later ones may be safer, but still...

What is the asking price? I think I have only seen one sell on ebay, and it went for about $300-400 IIRC (it was more than 60 days ago so the listing is long gone).

Keep in mind that these have as much gold as a gold 1 yen... less than $60 melt.
