I am just getting into collecting and I am trying to formulate some Carson City short set ideas that I can work on collecting. I would like to complete the traditional CC Morgan Short Set as one of my sets. I have also created my own short set idea, the CC 1875 set of small denomination silver coins. I thought this would be an interesting set because there is one mint mark variety and they made the 20c piece.
1875 10c-Above Bow mint mark
1875 10c-Below Bow mint marku
1875 20c
1875 25c
1875 50c

Does anyone else have any CC short set ideas they can share?

I am also thinking of doing the last 4 years of quarters since I will have the harder to find 1875 taken care of in the set above. 1875-1876-1878-1878

Thanks,
Jason

Do you have an idea of minimum grades you will be searching for?

All of your coins are Seateds, really can't go wrong.

If you're a bit spendier, I would suggest a set of 1871-74 CC half dollars.

The 1875-77 years seem to be the easiest.

For the Morgan dollars I will be pursuing XF40 to AU55. I want a circulated set because of the history.

For the 1875 set I will pursue high AU.

The early half dollar set is probably out of my budget. I'm trying to keep the entire collection around $15,000 or less.

Good luck on that AU 1875-cc quarter, as PCGS shows only 18 in that grade. I found a VF in a shop 10 years ago. Larry Briggs and Brian Greer's sites are good ones to watch, though neither has one right now.

I already have the 1875cc quarter in AU55 so I am covered there. Given the rarity in the grade, I am very lucky to own that one!!

Since I acquired the harder one of the set I am going to work on putting together the last four years of CC quarters with the die varieties.

1875cc
1876cc-serif cc mint mark
1876cc-skinny letter cc mint mark
1876cc-reverse of 73cc quarter. So much history on this one!!
1877cc
1878cc-serif cc mint mark
1878cc-half cancelled die mark

I must commend you for doing an excellent job of setting your goals realistically according to your budget and identifying exactly what you will be searching for and in what grades.

The value of the set you are working on will enhance the individual values, I believe, as the set you are working towards includes coins that are absolutely loved by a large populations of the collecting membership.

Even though I never anticipate selling any of my sets in my lifetime, I've built them so that they can be sold as sets, rather than the individual pieces. In a couple of cases I've been offered so much more for the sets over what I've paid, that I have sold a few sets (some to be rebuilt).

I always try to imagine what the dealer on the other side of the table will say when I bring something to them to sell.

In the case of this set you are working on, I can't imagine any dealer with any common sense not jumping up and down and wanting your set at a much better than average price.

Please keep us informed (WITH PICTURES) of your progress.
