I have a gold-toned 1945 Mercury dime in excellent condition. Are there any reasons for the gold-toning?

The tone on any coin is simply oxidation that occurs on the surfaces of the metal of the coin. The color will be determined by what the coin was in contact with. Some of the old holders gave a blue tint to silver coins and if you kept that dime in a brown envelope for a bit it might develop that gold tone.

Unless you find the coin in the holder it has resided in it's virtually impossible to say why a given tone is a particular color or colors.

It has gold toning because it has a very thin layer of patina (oxidation, silver sulfide, etc.) on the surfaces. This is the first color in the progression determined by physics.
