I just got both of them in today's mail. I'd post pics but too difficult to do in the holders. But I am glad I have both now.

Both varieties seem hard to find in circulation. I haven't done any extensive roll hunting, but in common change I've only come up with a handful of 2010 toonies since they were released.

I agree with 100% Scissel although 8,220,000 were minted.

Looked through a box and found 8 2010's in total. 6 of one (16) and 2 of the other (14). What is the history on this? Who noticed it first? Any other years possible?

This topic has been much discussed on a number of coin sites .. do some archive searches. The Toonie guru says that they are scarce .. someone installed a collar for the 2011 strikings while the 2010 were still being made. Look in the variety section of Trends or a large article(s) in the Numismatic News on the subject.

Here is one long thread on the topic:

2011 toonies have the 16 serration type collar
2012 aluminum bronze (aka old style) toonies have the 16 serration collar.
2012 plated steel toonies have 14 serrations and edge lettering.

It's possible there might be additional edge varieties for 2011 and/or for 2012. No one has reported any as of yet.

According to the other thread it seems I'm about 4 years late to the party! Surprised I found any.
