I've been wondering where I could use Coop's neat sign, I guess it can work here. I found this nickel in a roll from the bank. The base of the steps can be seen going through Jefferson's left eye and out to the field. On the reverse, the profile of his cheek shows over and in the door to the right of the main door. His eye shows beneath the steps. Just thought I'd share it.

As I look at the overlay Coop, it must be his nose and not his cheek in the doorway. Thanks ya'll, I was happy to find this one.

But when I flip it, it's the cheek.

It's pretty late, hopefully I have just fallen asleep. When I wake up, I think whatever is in the door to the right of the main door will be the same in both overlays.

It's clear to me this morning, my overlay shows how the reverse is affected, yours shows the obverse. Funny what a good night's sleep can do for you. lol

Thanks for the comments my friends. Newbie, look at the second picture I posted. See the line running from Jefferson's nose - through his left eye - and out the side of his head. That line is the base of the steps on the reverse. Die Clashes occur because the dies that struck the coin had previously struck each other without a planchet (unstruck coin) between them. When they hit each other, they transferred some of their design elements to each other - which in turn shows up on coins they strike thereafter.

When looking at a clash, you will note that the die is a negative of the coin struck. The raised area on a coin is deep into the die. The lower parts of the coin is on the outside of the die. So when a die clash happens, the two dies clash together leaving an outline of the deeper devices, but just the outline. The deeper parts of the die never touch. Just the fields and the outlines of the devices. (most of the time it is the outline of the bust or buildings, torches, bells and ETC that are affected by this clash. With no planchet between the dies, the make outlines on the opposite die.

But on a very strong you can see the devices:

But this is rare to find them that strong. Hope this help Newbie234

That is one way strong clash Coop! I didn't even know they could be that strong, I'd sure like to find one like that.

I was wondering if it went through a second clash after the first one, a second time perhaps in a row, altered those dies?

Sometimes I will put the overlay reduced on the full coin to show the area affected on one image:

Or the other way around. A small clash image on an overlay:

I try different things to see what works and what doesn't. Having an open mind helps a lot on getting better images or to enhance something that you appreciate on a coin.

Yes, I definitely agree. My capabilities are still limited, I haven't got the Photoshop yet. It seems there just aren't enough hours in the day. That's why I stay up so late. lol
