Maybe a dumb question but when split up & graded, are they considered MS, Specimen or Proof coins...

2011 and later are MS coins. 2010 and earlier are PL coins. Years with both toonies and cents are 7 coin sets.

DBM, why did the RCM change the coins in 2011 to MS? Are PL coins a thing of the past now?

Quote:Why did the RCM change the coins in 2011 to MS? My guess would be a larger profit margin... much cheaper and easier to scoop up the $3.90 of circulation strikes from Winnipeg and outsource the packaging of the sets. Yet - the prices of these "uncirculated sets" remained the same as pre-2011 proof-like sets that were struck in Ottawa.

SPP-Ottawa, I find these sets to be way overpriced for only $3.90. It's funny how you can buy the old sets with the nickel dollars for only a few dollars. And these new sets cost several times more. Go figure...

In defence of $25, the cost for an uncirculated set of new circulation issue coins each year, more than reasonable. Since collectors have no intention of spending them, the $3.90 value is meaningless compared to lack of other options, in terms of time, money and energy. Most banks do not receive mint state rolls and picking them out of circulation...well those are no longer "uncirculated".

just wonder my self like the force on why these new sets are sold for more and the mint is probably just greedy to make profit and not concern for collectors
