WOW, the rise of silver the past couple weeks has made working at the coin shop a very interesting experience. Non-stop sellers from open to close, people waiting at the door for the shop to open. Giving out numbers for service, and waits of up to two hours for service.

For a shop that never advertises, anyone that cares knows he pays more than anyone around for gold and silver. A local jeweler advertises 10X face for silver coin (best in town- HA).He bought 100 ounces of gold Tuesday alone, and buckets of silver. Sometimes there were over 20 people waiting to sell- and this has been going on since before Christmas of last year. It will now be interesting to see what happens Tuesday when the shop is open again, the drop in prices last week did not seem to deter anyone from selling.

O.K. enough of the boring stuff...on to the coins ! Since it was so busy the last couple weeks, my envelope at the shop has swelled considerably Mostly because it was so busy I never wanted to bother them to write up the sale.

My first new acquisition I will post here, the rest will follow in various other forums over the next...however long it takes I guess

They know me well at the shop, and they are coming around to my attribution and identification skills (though limited- but growing every day !) So when Ed saw this coin, he knew I would like it, and it might be a coin that could carry more value than the "cull" dollar it was destined to be. I checked it out, and sure enough I liked it, but I could not find anything that exactly matches it at VAMworld so I figure it is a no or low premium coin. A 16.50 coin in the cull bin, I offered 25 for it- he countered 22...SOLD..he he..I love these guys ! So here is the coin, a common date 1922-D Peace dollar in circulated condition with some real nasty die cracks- and a big long die break. I figure the die from this coin didn't last much longer.

The die crack does have a couple small breaks right where it goes under the neck ...

And the piece de resistance....

A close up of the start of the break.

And the rest..to then end of the break. It almost looks like the "I " is out of alignment from the break, probably just an illusion from the diagonal line running through it ?

All in all , a coin I like and would have paid 25 dollars for...what a sucker ! Next up...A Morgan dollar with similar problems.....boy...taking pics, editing, and posting really eats time !

Striking die break. There are a number of 1922-D VAM's which include a die break where yours is, but I can't correlate any of the known ones with yours. This bears further investigation.

Exactly what I thought SuperDave, I found several with similar breaks- but none that exactly matched it. I guess I am going to have to look at more of them....

Rainman, I must declare that I am cheating on the photos. I use the binocular scope at the shop to take the super close up shots. It does work well, just point the camera at the eyepiece and you get great detailed pics. My camera can do well, but not that well !

And I am still having fun at the shop, I get yet another week of layoff from my regular job....so I am going to work there again next week ! Life is Good !

You oughta post the detail pic (the one that includes IN GO) at the Home Page Discussion board at VAMworld. I'm still working out the syntax of posting images there, though, so I can't be much help.

G'day, not much into die cracks myself; but I commend the spectacular photography.

And make the most of your new job: the Oz Government is talking about recruiting 15,000 construction workers from the U.S. to keep up with demand here. That might reduce the lay-off time.
