Opinions please. COuld this coin be upgraded from a 53 to 55? I had a 53 that had a lot less detail than this dime. To the point that the head looked like a flat blob.

I need the 1875cc dimes in AU55, both above and below bow. If you happen to have one or know where one is for sale?

With "grade-flation" in force, it might upgrade, but I would not bet the ranch on it. The piece has a fair amount of wear in the fields, there are some little ticks here and there, and it has been dipped at some point.

I'm courious. Why do need an upgrade from AU-53 to 55? That's a small jump. Does it really make that much differnece in the price? Is it some sort PCGS registry thing? I'd never try for such a small upgrade given the expense and odds of getting it.

From those pics I say no but it might look better in-hand.

P.S. Per Bill's question: The 53 to 55 value difference is less than the cost of recertification so I wouldn't waste money trying.

Thanks for the input. I am trying to build an AU55 set because I am OCD like that. I should just sell this one and wait and buy an AU55. I bought this one before my idea was fully baked.

I wouldn't try for an upgrade on that coin, either. Especially, as has been mentioned, the difference in value change is less than the cost to reholder.

I'd also advise being more concerned with the coin, rather than ONLY the grade. If you find a beautiful 58 of some type you need, it would be nuts to pass on a good buy just because it's not a 55.

Try looking at the coins you want in your set and see the price differences in the AU 50-58 range. You might want to consider that range, rather than a single grade.

I have an AU-58 SLQ set I'm working on. I couldn't resist 1-2 really attractive AU-55s nor could I pass on some MS-63's, MS-64s, and MS-65s. A little flexibility will make for a more fun collecting experience. I know a guy that was collecting quarter eagles. He has all sorts of grades, but has one of each kind going back to the beginning. It was 30 years in the making.

Thank you for all of the great advice. I am very new to this and still trying to wrap my head around grades and consistency. I get stuck in this mindset of a rigid set and at times, to my detriment, can't look past the grade number. I am looking at the coin within the grade though and not just buying grades. It's a new mentality for me for sure. I am working on putting together a high end circulated set so I it seems like it will be OK to look at AU55 to AU58 as long as the AU58 is not a "slider" but a legitimate circulated coin.

I also would be flexible with AU grades.

And once this set progresses it goes without saying....
