The following is a cut-and-paste from a post I made on another thread. Ziggy29, as well as another forum member asked me to describe the trip, and I felt the description may have been missed where posted. So, the cut-and-paste.
-------------------------------
Just back.

Wonderful cruise.

We were the first ship back into Cozumel. Leaves gone off the trees. Some building damage. Snorklers reported that they saw few fish and much of the coral was gone. People remain friendly, and it seemed to me there were many good bargains for people interested in shopping.

Roatan was taken off our ports-of-call list due to inability to unload passengers. Progresso, Mexico was added. The good news there, for us, was the opportunity to visit Chichen Itza, as well as other Mayan ruins. After teaching about such places for 35 years I was finally able to see it for myself. The pyramid at Chichen Itza was absoltely awesome. Probably the greatest man-made wonder I have ever seen.

Belize was interesting. We took a boat down the Beliuze River and saw Crocadiles, Iguanas, Howler Monkeys, and other wildlife. The bus trip to the boat dock took us past people and their homes, which make one so thankful to be a citizen of a modern nation. Many of the homes wouldn't make good storage sheds. Poverty at its worst.

On the Yucatan Penninsula, we were told that summer climate can be 130 degrees with 100 percent humitity. Not a place to store coins.

To summarize, The western Caribbean is still a great place to vacation. Cancun wasn't opened back up yet, and Cozumel had lost some of its charm. However, the weather was great, and the water crystal clear....and the people friendly. And, of course, the cruise line personnel bend over backward to make your stay with them absoltely wonderful.

We were lucky that we just beat a tropical storm back home.

Getting home was interesting. We flew from Houston, north to Colorado, and then westward, across the San Luis Valley, 30,000 feet over our town of Delta, over Grand Junction, and on to Salt Lake City. All so that we could catch a flight back to Grand Junction, and then drive home to Delta!

Coins. I'll try and post pictures later. Nothing rare and exotic. My favorites were common stuff picked up in Belize. I liked their design. Also the paper currency.

A wonderful and memorable vacation. I would recommend it to anyone. Good to be home.

Sounds like it was a nice vacation. Sometime last year, I don't remember the exact month, I was fortunate to be able to go to the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean (specifically Grand Cayman)for a couple of weeks. Under normal conditions, I would never be able to do this...there is a fairly wealthy lady here in our town who has a second home there and she asked me if I would go there and paint her house! Mostly, I just worked my buns off, but did have a day or 2 to look around, went to the turtle farm, took a short submarine ride, went out and petted the Stingrays, and did a little snorkeling! Shortly after I left, the big hurricane came, devasted the island, and took part of the roof off the house I had painted. All my work and all the money she had put into it were gone! I think she's rebuilding. The funny thing was I hadn't yet rekindled my interest in coins and so it never crossed my mind to pick up some examples. I was on a fairly remote section of the island too. No banks or stores.

Sounds like it was a great trip!

I would be very interested in visiting the Mayan ruins. I love thinking about the old civilizations and societies...especially when they are so different from the society we have today. Lots and lots to be learned. There is also a thrill holding or touching something that was used so long ago.

I have gone on three cruises in my life. On the second, one stop was Grand Cayman. We also went to the turtle farm, petted the stingrays, and snorkeled.

The people there were very friendly, and one clerk at a gift store took extra time to find Cayman coins for me in her cash register. They are now part of my collection.

SusanLynn9:

The ruins were awesome. I have never seen a man-made structure as spectacular as the pyramid at Chichen Itza.

Did you happen to go in the little shop that sells the famous Tortuga rum cake? By the time I finished eating the free samples, I didn't care if I bought any or not![:p] If you petted the stingrays, you must have been out off of Rum Point. That's where I spent my 2 weeks! About 100 feet from the shore.

I LOVE the Caribbean. Living in Florida, I'm able to visit the Bahamas cheaply and try to go every year, though I haven't been in about 3 years lol. I also like Antiqua and St Marteen. I REALLY want to see Barbados but so far can't swing it. I've almost got enough FF miles to go but I'll probably use them for a bigger (further) trip next year.
Glad you had fun!

Yep, been there, done that. Fun.

Nick:

Our three cruises have been to: twice to the western Caribbean, and one to the Bahamas. We would like to go to the eastern Caribbean, to the places you listed.

In April we'll celebrate our 40th wedding aniversary, and it looks like we'll take a looooooong cruise! From Houston to France and England!
