I can recall many such defeats at auction. Its part of choosing to buy this way and take advantage of the opportunities to grab a deal. Someone else just wanted it more this time.

Thanks Bobby. They don't quite look like this one. The only consolation would be if the one I lost out on was fake or doctored.

@numismatic_student ... IMHO, the $200 realized for your "one that got away" was too high a price to pay. It's damaged and has been harshly cleaned; and, maybe worth half the price it fetched. I just sold a decent G-VG Unity for $100; being worn but problem-free. If this is an issue that you plan to keep for many years, I'd humbly suggest that you seek out a problem-free, VF specimen in the $300-$400 range. I passed on an XF at $450 last year.

Out of curiosity, what is there about this Unity issue that calls out to you?

ExoGuy, I like the aesthetics of this coin in spite of the severe damage to one side. It is also not the chocolate brown of every other example. I have placed a lot of copper coins in solvents and they never come out with the even, unmarked surface of this coin. I had some concerns about authenticity, but was more than willing to risk it.

As an aside, I purchased another coin from this seller, posted in the grading section, and that one is fake according to a member there.

It looks harshly cleaned to me as well. You could easily make any chocolate brown example look like that with some work and disregard for following generations of collectors.

if it was opposite day i'd call it original surfaces..all kidding aside, this coin is harshly cleaned, lots of hairlines can be seen and an unnatural color..you dodged a bullet I think.

Looks like I may have dodged one bullet and stepped in front of another. This seller also had a 1877 IHC and a 1916-D merc for sale today. Avoided bidding on those because it was more of a gamble than I was willing to take. Those coins had many bidders.

The coin was scrubbed with a wire brush of some sort. You can see the striations on the coin's surface in the seller's pictures. Feel good that you dodged a bullet.
