I just picked up this half dollar. It weights around 12.4 grams. I want to know what kind of remedies can be done to improve its eye appeal. Its color is black in natural lighting and it appears that there are several layers of corrosion. Must be a metal detector find! I was thinking baking soda and aluminum foil, or perhaps some coin dip. What do you guys think?

From my understanding and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, Corrosion is permanent. It can be repaired or smoothed but I'm not sure how the mechanics of that process work. Here was one I was looking at from the fun show that went through that process. https://coins.ha.com/itm/large-cent...dLots-101116

One thing for sure; do not use baking soda and aluminum foil. I don't know if anything can be done to improve it's present state . If it was me ,I'd use it as a pocket piece . But I believe that's not what you had in mind for it .

You can't hurt that coin anymore than it's already been hurt. So go with a silver dip.

She is what she is a corroded coin with a hole. Turning the coin white or lighter from a chemical bath is not going to help her eye appeal.

How much did you pay? No, that is an ugly coin, nothing can remedy it.

Its damaged and you cant change that. Honestly, the hole bothers me the most, I hate holed coins. That said, It's still cool, and could be a fun pocket piece.

She was already converted to jewelry - something that likely sends shivers up most spines 'round here - so why not clean her up as you would any other piece of jewelry?
Cheers,

Leave it alone. It might be hard to read now, but any cleaning attempt will make it horrid.

Make it a pocket piece, nothing you can do with that...

If it were mine I would consider bathing it in olive oil for a few months. After a while you may be able to loosen a little dirt with a toothpick. When you remove it, rub it between thumb and index fingers. Wash off with soapy water, and perhaps soak in acetone for a few days.

A very ugly coin, indeed. Spray it will silver paint.
