Would you prefer a higher grade (say a MS66) or would you prefer a lower grade (say a MS64) with designation such as FT/FB (dimes),FBL (franklins), or FH ( Standing Liberty quarter)? Why? For me, I would usually go for the lower grade with designation. I really like a nice fully struck coin since the FT or FBL is how the coin was intended to look. These are also typically equally rare population wise and often much cheaper.

Why not go for both some dates are easy to find in 65/66 and fsb. Obviously coins like 45 P are non existent in high grade fsb

Thanks for the lesson. I had no idea what those abbreviations stood for. I collect a lot of early coins and haven't run into that designation yet.

Depends on the scarcity of a given date and mintmark in FH/FSB/FT/FBL/whatever. All else being equal, I'd rather have, say, a MS65FH SLQ than a MS66 non FLH.

However, to answer the question posed, I would say the lower grade with designation. I want all of the details for an example in my tyoe set.

this is tough one for me. I always go for the highest grade I can afford and normally do not look for the designations as I buy to fill slots in my collection and not slabs as they do not fit well into the holes, it makes a mess of the album.

Purely from a personal satisfaction standpoint, I'd prefer the higher grade coin that is 95% of the way to getting the designation.

In general, I want good strikes over a higher number. That said, If the higher grade is almost to the designation, why not?
