Got this coin from CCF Secret Santa. I posted the pic with the as a 1938S-1MM-002, Stage C as indicated in the E-book. The question was asked what does the Stage designation indicate. I assume it has something to do with the age of the die but this Stage C coin had the reverse die changed (I am assuming that the previous reverse die broke, the earlier stage reverses were cracked). I could not find any definitions on the ebook site. So, can someone clarify?

Quote:

Stage A: Very weak secondary mintmark - EDS, scarce
Die crack Left wheat lines to rim - LMDS
Die crack upper Right wheat grains to rim
Die break in Right wheat grains
Stage B: Obverse is MDS Reverse is LDS
Stage C: Strong secondary mintmark - MDS Reverse die changed - MDS

Stages are event that have changed from the previous stage. Die cracks, die scratches, die changes, clashes, events that they have noted on the use of a die pair. Note the notion of the die states. This die has a die that was a later die state, then changed to continue use of the obverse die. So events that happen during the dies life.
Stage D: Strong secondary mintmark - LDS Die gouge Left wheat tip to E of E PLURIBUS UNUM - LDS
Stage E: Obverse and Reverse are VLDS
