So every so often I see an infomercial on TV or HSN where they offer gold plated or platinum plated coins. Did the Mint issue these? How much precious metal is in them? I know it's really small but how do these people get away with it?

By plating the coin you have ruined almost all the numismatic value its just damaging the coin. The us mint does not issue plated coins. In addition the amount of gold plating in so small its worth almost nothing. Stay away from HSN and TV offers. I found a 1976 gold plated Kennedy half in a roll a while back. Someone might pay 75 cents for it on ebay.

Gold plating stripped is about a quarter of a cent. Platinum plating stripped is worth 3 cents to 5 cents. If it's electroplated, though, forget it. It's nothing. When a coin is plated OOM, as baron said, any numismatic value is gone.
