I am always puzzled by CBHDs like this one, slabbed VF30-35, where the fields look as if someone thumb rubbed them or removed the natural toning, like with a pencil eraser. Is this original or just a market acceptable condition?
What do you guys think?

It looks original to me. The protected areas near the rims show some natural color while the exposed open fields show even gray tone resulting from circulation friction. Mid-VF grade seems appropriate to me based on level of wear.

Which grading service was it that assigned a split-grade for this coin (VF30-35)?

Its a nice looking CBH in my opinion and would say it is market acceptable and very close to original.

Very nice market acceptable coin. I actually like the way that looks.

Not only is it tough to be certain of these in hand, but it's really hard with photos only. I've seen many times when a photo and the actual coin were so far apart on look and "feel" that a guess with photos only was quite frequently incorrectly judged.

In this instance I like everything about this CBH. At first it gives the impression that the fields have been played with, since they are so much different from the protected areas of the design elements, but in this instance I don't think that look equals any indications of cleaning.

In any event, if this is being sold at a "regular" VF-30 price, I'd snatch it. It is a very nice example.

Comparing the obverse and reverse, it appears there might have been (as poster notes) an old cleaning on the obverse fields. Certainly market acceptable in any event and most attractive.

Looks like album toning with possibly an old time cleaning at some point which I don't think hurts this coin. It is very attractive and a solid VF-30.

That coin is original and very attractive. There are some interesting things going on with the physics in your coin.
