Quote:http://www.PCGS.com/Lingo/AU-58 This is for "About Uncirculated" (the grade) and "58" (the numerical designation of that grade). Also called "Almost Uncirculated-58." There is the slightest wear on the high points, even though it may be necessary to tilt the coin towards the light source to see the friction. In many cases the reverse of an AU58 coin will be fully Mint State. Less than 10% of the surface area will show luster breaks. The grade of "Borderline Unc" equates to AU58. If the above is correct, and PCGS and CAC both correctly graded this coin, then more than 90% of the coin depicted shows unbroken luster. Although some on this thread expressed that there was only some luster remaining around the devices, I think that the coin has toned to a slightly different color and is hiding the original luster. Or both PCGS and CAC got it wrong. I could see where they could miscalculate in observing slightly less than 90% luster remaining, but it would be difficult to imagine two independent graders seeing more than 90% luster on a coin that had only a small amount of luster remaining near the devices and in protected areas. I don't have the coin in hand, and I am looking at the same pictures you are. I will take a closer look when I receive it and try to post some additional pictures if they are helpful in clarifying this question. Appreciate all your input.

Also got this today. It is toned darker than what I expected from the pictures. I still like the surfaces a lot. Thoughts on the higher res pictures?

The second set of pictures make it look very nice. The color and eye appeal are all there for a 58. $618 is a good price here.

This thread highlights the problems with grading toned coins using pictures, especially when they have already been slabbed. We CCF'ers do not have the advantage of grading an already slabbed coin in hand with a 10x loupe, as does the TPG'er. In addition, there always remains at least a slight temptation for TPG'ers to over grade coins. A satisfied customer with a higher grade is likely to come back with repeat business. I think AU55 is about right. There is some obvious, albeit very slight, wear on the high points of the first coin.

I am fine with the coin at 58. I like the toning and after seeing your photos the CAC sticker is warranted. You made a good buy on the coin.
