Hope y'all are having a great holiday. This was a pretty good Christmas. I love the chopped Trade dollar in my type set, but this good-looking, common-date, unchopped example came around and I pulled the trigger on it at what I thought was a fair price. Would appreciate your expert thoughts on what the grade is and what you believe is a fair price for the coin. As per Coinfrog's multiple requests, third party grade and price paid to be revealed in 48 hours. As always thanks in advance!

Beautiful coin. Based on the pictures, it is MS grade. If it is a lower MS Grade, which is still awesome for this coin. I would pay between $1200 - $1700 for this example.

Nowhere near MS. AU at best, and dipped at that.

Type I Obverse and Reverse, so the less rare variety. I'd pay $200-250, but I'd stay close to the first number because of the dip.

AU-55. I see only the smallest indications of remaining luster in the tightest areas of the design elements. I don't see any indication of cleaning or dipping.

Thanks for all the responses so far. Seems like many see an AU coin. Where are you seeing wear?

Agree apparent lack of luster suggests light circulation. AU-55.

AU53. Only small amounts of luster remain and only in protected areas and around the legends and devices. Nice reverse die crack. TPG probably said AU53 or AU55. It's also a very solid strike, which helps.

I have it at AU53, however the green tinges over the surfaces may be from being in a flip for a while OR its just the lighting giving off that tone.

Thanks to all for your informed thoughts and assessments. I love this coin for its unmarked surfaces and lack of signs of wear. William Barber's design elements are all there to see in plenty of detail. Luster has faded to toning, and I am told that this is to be expected from a 19th century silver coin that is hitting 140 years old. I was delighted to pay $618 for it, and was committed to paying up to $750. Gladly I accepted the slight discount. Happy collecting in the new year!

Nice coin, If you like it like that, then you like it. It is not my cup of tea. it looks overdipped and lacks luster.I would've maxed out at like $375-400, but If you like it...
