I have recently begun an MS-63 minimum Peace dollar set. Currently, I have only acquired 2 coins that happen to be graded by NGC.

One of the crossroads I am finding myself at is as to whether I should ONLY be purchasing NGC coins going forward. Of course, I know I should be "buying the coin; not the holder." However, would there be any major advantage to sticking with only NGC coins?

Thanks for your advice and input!

Not for me. Learn to grade and then buy the coin, NEVER the holder, especially at your 63 mid-level threshold.

I have become a slab snob. This was not by intent, it is just how it has happened. I have 39 graded coins and they are all from PCGS. I do not intend to keep it this way though I just have not found a coin I have wanted to buy in another TPG slab. I am collecting a few "sets" so I want to keep them consistent otherwise I buy the coin with the intent to crack it out.

Ultimately buy what you want. A mixed set or a matched set doesn't matter as long as you are happy with it and the coins look good to you.

It varies for me and depends on the set. I have a graded set of Bust Quarters and they are all in either PCGS or NGC slabs. The quarter has to have good eye appeal and the slab doesn't matter as long as it is PCGS or NGC. I am slowly but surely chipping away at a set of $2.5 Indian quarter eagles. I am only buying these coins in NGC slabs because in my opinion gold looks really good next to the white background of the NGC holders.

My Washington registry set is (by necessity) all PCGS but I do have a few nice non-set quarters that are in NGC and ANACS holders. Same thing with my Morgan date set, which is PCGS, but I do also have some nice Morgans in NGC and ANACS holders too. Everything else, is raw, NGC, PCGS, ANACS, and even a few (old) PCI, SEGS and ICG slabs in the mix.

I need to do some more research on registry sets to see if it's something I want to do. My main goal is to get a set of really nice coins.

I've considered going all PCGS going forward and possibly submitting the NGC coins in hopes of them crossing over. Still haven't decided.

Thanks for everyone's comments so far.

I don't really consider the holder, if I'm looking at the coin in hand. The coin's look will determine whether it's a buy or a pass. That said, because my interests lie mainly within the realm of early (Turban/Capped Bust), pre-Civil War branch mint, or Indian $2 1/2 gold, the holder almost always ends up being PCGS, with the occasional exception. Experience has shown me that PCGS more accurately grades these types of gold coins on a more consistent basis.

If you find the 1934-s difficult to obtain in MS63, I'd suggest going with an SGS or NCGS slab! It'll be an awesome buy!

I collect coins, not slabs from a particular TPG. Your mileage may vary.

I love raw coins. Many nice ones appear trapped in TPG plastic cages. Boo...

I like my coins raw, so my opinion would be moot.

I buy exclusively PCGS, partly because I like consistency in the appearance of my collection (different label styles and even details of the slabs themselves not withstanding) and partly because NGC won't fit in a PCGS box (and I want all of the coins in a set to be stored together). Plus I just find the PCGS slab more visually appealing.

There have been a lot of tempting NGC coins that would fill a slot but none have caused me to cross brands yet.

I don't buy many slabs. I have some coins in slabs I have bought for my 7070 and there are all 4 grading companies worth of coins.

If I were going to do a slabbed set of a particular coin series I would stay with one company just for the consistency.
But that's just my humble opinion.

Im particular to PCGS,i will buy other coins in different slabs, but they all end up going to PCGS to be put into a secure slab, and then I enter the registry. I like how PCGS slabs look better then NGC,but that will all be personal preference.

I stick to one TPG per collection. Something in my brain won't allow me to mix slabs within a series.
