http://www.ebay.com/itm/1842-Morgan...AOSwa~BYTWbnI'm going to post this in the counterfeit section as well, but the seller labels this as a morgan, but obviously not. If you look at it closely it looks weird, and they want upto 35 working days to ship? It has to be coming from China....

Seller lists 5 fakes, all with bids. The good part is you can tell all of these are bad from 5 feet away.

If by "now" you include the past 20 years, I would agree.

I really wanted to see the listing but, alas, it has been removed.

Anybody think that there are more fake Seated dollars out there than real surviving examples?

Quote:Anybody think that there are more fake Seated dollars out there than real surviving examples? IMHO, yes, assuredly so. I wonder if the Chinese kept mintage records? Back in the 1990's, I previewed a case of coins that were to be sold the following day in a gun auction. There were a number of fake dollars, including an 1884 and an 1885 Seated type. I informed the auctioneer and strongly suggested he confirm my assessment before selling the stuff. As there was nothing in the auction for me, I didn't attend. I later heard through a friend that all the "coins" were sold. His brother-in-law had spent thousands on the coins, himself. I offered to go to court with the guy and testify if need be. Apparently, he was too embarrassed or intimidated to pursue the matter.

Yeah, it seems like whenever I see a post about this sort of thing, the listing is deleted by the time I click the link. I'd love it if folks would save the photos on ebay and post them here. I assume the best way to recognize counterfeits is to become really, really familiar with the real thing. Still, I'd like to lay eyes on fakes as people find them.

Probably about 10 years ago, I saw a "complete set" of Liberty Seated dollars. They were all Chinese counterfeits, and they even came in a Chinese counterfeit of a Dansco album!
