Is it me or do valuations seem absurd for poor examples?
Rest in Peace

A key coin both for Large Cent and Type collectors, so there are far more people with the 1793 on their want lists than available pieces for sale.

Because of budget considerations there are many from those groups that just want to "fill the hole" and that helps keep the lower grades well supported for higher prices.

Like Mox said, it's supply and demand and the demand is what is truly absurd!

No demand here.
I've got mine.
It's an NGC VG-10.
One less hole in my type set.

If I'm not mistaken, less than 40,000 were made. For comparison, the 1795 plain edge cent had a mintage of over 500,000

For poor grade, yes. They are absurd. For the upper grades, a little less so. I will probably be content getting an old electrotype of the Chain Cent and 1796 Half Dollar.

They made about 36,000 of them, today there are maybe 2,000 of them left in any condition and most of them are in very low grade. Demand for those 2,000 coins is very high from type collectors, date collectors, and then there are several hundred early date variety collectors that need four of them (I have three of them, still need an S-1.). So no matter what condition they are in there are collectors that really want them. Hence the high value even for poor quality coins.

Post pictures if you get a chance. I would love to see a beauty graded VG 10!

When the number of Chain cents in existence is a tiny, tiny fraction of the number of coin collectors who would like to own one, it shouldn't surprise you that they are expensive to come by.
