I'm not to sure what to make of this coin either. It looks like Cud that was stamped through . I would love to have any thoughts on this. Thanks for looking!

Looks like some serious Die Deterioration. It could be die atrittion. But I'm not sure
Rest in Peace

Looks like a pretty late die state.

Good question. I see the height over the rim. So I sent BJ Kneff a note on this one.

Here is the message back from BJ:

Quote:

Hi Coop,
The die is failing and deterioration is the cause of the missing parts of the die. Theoretically it could be a Cud because extra metal has filled in the missing die parts, but that would be opening a can of worms. It would take a lot of speculation on what to call and not to call a Cud under these conditions.

It is best to stay with the definition that a Cud is caused by a die break and not by Die Deterioration. Of course you can look at a die break as a form of premature Die Deterioration (LOL).

Have a good New Year.

BJ

So it is just Die Deterioration at this point. I thought it was a borderline coin, but just not that close yet to the border. I wanted to hear it from him first.
