It's not fake...it's mis-attributed. Canadian varieties get mis-attributed all the time. Dont blame centsles, ICG, NGC or PCGS... Tell me what you think of this 1858 5c "Small Date" I won from Heritage Auctions a few months back: https://coins.ha.com/itm/canada/can...1620-62125.sBottom line is...know what you're buying

Just let me get this straight. If a reputable dealer sells a misattributed coin, as happens at least once a month, and we saw last week on this forum, it's OK, it's an oversight, they can't be expected to carefully examine every TPG coin they come across. If a less than upstanding dealer such as centsles or asyn does the same it's a ripoff.

Very poor choice of words in your title. I was expecting to see a 100% counterfeit coin sold by a shady fly by night seller.. In the sellers defense I seriously doubt someone with over 181,000 transactions and nearly perfect 99.8% positive feedback is DELIBERATELY trying to sell a "fake" coin and trying to "rip someone off"... Surely he did not personally go down to ICG and slab that coin in that holder himself.. I wonder how many high volume coin dealers in the U.S., trying to resell an obscure variety of a Canadian cent, honestly even know what the heck an "obverse 1" even looks like? I can't blame the guy for trusting what the TPG slabbed the coin as. Outside of checking for the correct date, grade and type of coin in the holder it's not something obvious to anyone that doesn't collect or specializes in this variety.. I've seen and heard of many coins placed in wrong or mislabeled holders by TPG's. I've seen mistakes as stupid and obvious as a 1909 S Indian Head cent placed inside an 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent labeled holder by a popular and reputable TPG. If someone put that for sale on ebay who would you consider the idiot in that sale, the buyer or the seller? Buyer beware!! I just wish people would resist this knee jerk urge to bash coin seller's without first giving them the benefit of doubt. I believe at some point, as buyers, more specifically variety collectors, we all need to take some responsibility for knowing what it is WE are paying for.... I can't begin to count how many times I've read "Please Look Closely at The Coin in The Photo and Judge For Yourself, This is The Coin You Will Receive" in sellers description..

Does icg guarantee? Maybe someone can get someone to take it down, or someone on ebay contact the seller? It's the common type. That's too bad. Seller probably has no clue?

Well, for sure Obv 2 .. and it's also been cleaned, as seen by the powder reidue upper Obverse between the denticles, so it's not MS either. I hold ICG in the same opinion as centles's basement brand..

The fact that centsles is still in business is a testament that most buyers have no clue what they are buying.

ok maybe my choice of words are wrong for the title but I wont defend the seller,, I have seen many of his over graded cleaned mis attributed coins time and time again. this seller knows what he has,,, his mis attributed coins always seem to be recognized as the scarcer of the varieties, you can bet he wont call an 1884 obv1 an obv 2

It's not one of his many "NNC-graded" coins, though. I think ICG is recognized by e-bay.

Yes it is mis-attributed on the holder, however, this coin will sell. Who knows, maybe the buyer will get it re-graded and corrected?

The most interesting theme of this thread is that if this was an obverse 1 coin mis-attributed as an obverse 2, this thread wouldn't exists.

@ Coinhunter..... " hammer meet nail" . Very well said! There is no sense slamming any seller on ebay whether it is ASYN, Centsles, APMEX or any one else unless it is for selling counterfeits or illegal practices. Absolutely nothing to be gained otherwise. On this listing it is very possible that Centsles has no idea that ICG got it wrong I have dealt with Centsles myself in the past and have had just a single issue that was resolved professionally and quickly. Not defending them just a personal anecdote.

He sells lots of coins with a good feedback history. He DOES miss many key varieties that he sells and you can get some real bargains. However, some auctions, like this one http://www.ebay.ca/itm/142220034352...RK:MEBIDX:IT get me to wondering because the 2 key bidders seem to only bid on centles's stuff and no one else. I've gotten some pretty good stuff (3-4 items)from him in the past that were key very scarce varieties that were not described and know of others who have as well.
