I got 3 of the 2016 Coin & Chronicles sets from the US Mint on day 1, and, I always check the coins for any errors or varieties. Lo and behold, the stars on the reverse of the brass Ronald & Nancy Reagan medal showed some significant notching, and, I sent all 3 to John Wexler for attribution. All 3 flew, and, John says this is his first double die for a Mint Medal(I believe there are DDO / DDR on older smaller Mint medals, but, unsure which ones/years).
I had these sent to Anacs for grading, and just got these back tonight. I cannot make a perfect triple 70 set, so, a 69 will work.
I have to write Anacs, as I requested a "Discovery Piece" Label, as on my "Hot Lips" 1953-S & 1955-S Roosevelt dimes early this year...didn't get the label.(.did someone beat me to the lineup?)
Anyway, check all your Mint coins..ya never know what you will find.

Amazing sharp eyed find. Congratulations. Now you've given me another to-do for the day.

Thanks for sharing this. It's always fun to find the first reported of ANYTHING.

Congrats, that's a great find! Its always fun to discover something new.

A while back I thought I found a DDO on this medal but we couldn't tell if it was part of the design or not. Could you post or send me a pic of Nancy's eyeball since we know this is a different die?

I looked at Nancy's eyelid SjlundCoin...mine are exactly like your pics..there are 2, maybe 3 small parallel lines there, that mimic doubling. I would guess, since there is no doubling close to the area, like the nose bridge would be a perfect area, that it is just the design, and, normal.I'll get some pics up later tonight.

So I looked at the back of my medal and its the DDR! I sold one of my medals earlier, but I still have two of these.

Thanks for the heads up

Thats awesome congrats and great eye! No problem getting the proof dollar certified from the set after it was opened or was it sent in before the proofs were released on their own? Would also like to hear back on the discovery piece-hopefully it was just a mishap but I'm curious too

Thanks everybody..yes, all coins original to the set, no substitutions, and, good news on my label..I called Anacs, and, I FORGOT to request it on my submission form, and, they will relabel for free..I just sent them all back for another trip to chilly Colorado!
Will take pics when their back.
Since this is a new double die, on a medal that has minimal numismatic interest, I don't expect to retire from selling 1 or 2 sets....keeping the 69 set for ME....I have to admit, the notching on the stars was EXACTLY like all the thousands of Ike dollars I have studied over the years, so, my "eye" was/is attuned to double die notching on stars..thanks to the IKES, I was able to spot it on the Reagan Medal, in a roundabout way. It took a LOT of time, and coins to learn the difference between strike doubling(plate doubling/machine doubling), and true hub doubling.

Here's the re-labeled medal..this one I keep, as "Discovery pieces" are coveted parts of my collection. I am selling 1 complete set. 1 of the proof eagles has to go back, as I was taking pics, noticed debris...turned out to be static lint, under the slab on obverse, making the coin look damaged, so, anacs said they would clean it up, and reholder for free.
I believe John Wexler will have an article in CoinWorld soon about this cool find, in his Varieties Notebook.

Was this the one with the possible doubled eye lid?

No..I checked the eyelids on all 3 of mine, it is the die design, which mimics a notching there, so, that one is out.

Thanks for the update. I keep strange facts stored like that. Now I know that it is part of the design. Chances are it will come here again sometime....
