Well, Sir.OverGrader strikes again. And he is NOT giving up on this coin, apparently. First saw this coin sometime in July-august, starting bid $9.99. Never saw the coin get above $11.50, but he isn't giving up!

Wow, that is quite a coin. Luckily the corrosion appeared to preserve the last digit of the date. Any chance it is an 1809 rather than 1808?

For some collector wanting to piece together a "worst-ever" year set of large cents, or an ugly type set, perhaps, the price seems about right.

Now, if only it had a significant counterstamp!

No chance, it's an 1808 S-277, earlier than Die stage IV. Key is the point of leaf below the F on OF. There are three 1808 varieties and one 1809. The only one with the point of leaf that far right is S-277. On S-277 die stage IV there is an arc crack on the rev from the rim through the D the wreath and the S to the rim. That crack isn't there so it is before Die Stage IV. 1809 always has a strong crack from the rim down through the E in STATES to the wreath. That isn't present on this coin.

Probably barely worth the shipping cost unfortunately.
Rest in Peace

@Roy ... I do like counterstamps, but that one on an 1887 nickel looks like someone was either having some fun or simply testing a stamp on hard nickel. Counterstamps that tell a story or at least offer potential as such are the ones I mostly seek.

Looks like no sale on the 1808. Maybe, if the seller dropped his starting bid to $9.98 ....
