I've been thinking about purchasing a 1934 $1000 Federal Reserve Note, depending on the condition they can be very expensive. I'm looking for one faily close to face value. Not that I would intend to use, but just in case. Are these notes still considered legal tender? And would a bank still except it?

Don't quote me on this but I thought I'd read before somewhere on this site that currently the $100 is our largest paper denomination.

For some reason I think you're right Arthrene. I don't think you could use that note to buy something for $1000. I am honestly not sure, but I don't believe it can be used as legal tender anymore. I don't have any of my books here, but I can look it up tonight if nobody else has a definitive answer for you by then.

tights the link you posted want let me see it. I am pretty sure you could spend it. It wouldnt be wise b/c you could get more to sell it. be like spending a 20 dollar gold piece. You could cash it in but not for gold per ounce but for 20 dollars. the 100 is the largest the beauru prints now but you can still spend older notes like the 1000 or 500. about 95% sure

Are national bank notes still accepted as currency, or are they only collector's items?

Yes, any national bank notes still in circulation are legal tender at face value as a matter of law. National bank notes were issued from 1863 to 1935. They are probably worth more than face value to currency collectors, however, because they are very rare.

You might have a hard time spending it though since some nitwit would insist on marking all over it with the counterfeit pen and then they would say it was fake because the pen indicated so. The problem is that the pens do not work on the old note paper stock

Also, it would be a complete waste of money and as soon as it hit a bank, it would be sent to the nearest Fed for destruction
