Hi all,

would this penny have a die clash or is it the ghost effect that is caused by metal flowing from one side to the other?
You can see the head of King George V clearly around the reverse.

Hi Paul

To me that looks like the normal 'ghosting' that is commonly found on British George V pennies of 1911 - 1926. The Royal Mint modified the King's effigy in 1926 in an attempt to stop this effect, but they only resolved the problem completely in 1928 when they adopted a much smaller obverse portrait.

The whole of this issue, especially in the Penny, was notorious for 'ghosting', and was a major problem for The Royal Mint.

It was so bad in fact, the The Royal Mint had new master dies prepared, and a completely new issue of the whole coinage made in 1926.
