I was wanting to purchase a few ASE but the premiums on them are ridiculous. I probably own around 125 silver eagles right now, I wanted to add to my stack by buying another tube. Where and when do they go on sale? What's a fair premium to pay for them? Are they worth it?

I would keep an eye on the price of silver & wait for a significant drop before buying.

About $2 over is considered good. $1.50 over is really good. Non-BU pieces can sometimes be found for less. Check this link periodically and have a target, like buy at $17/ea delivered or something similar then go for it. http://www.goldprice.com/silver-american-eagles

Any lower price drop in silver and the ASE premium will expand to make up the difference, historically. My LCS charges a flat $5 over. $2.50-$2.75 online Checkout https://comparesilverprices.com

If you want less than $2 over spot for ASE's buying by the roll will get you below that margin on occasion. However, spot price will always have a greater affect on final price. While ASE's do have a higher cost over spot than rounds or bars, you will usually be able to sell at $1+ over spot, too.

Why should they go on sale? The prices track spot with the premium. If spot goes down, the price goes down too and sellers take the loss. If spot goes up, the price goes up and sellers take the gain. Either way there's no margin for sales

I don't know if any are on sale now but keep an eye on APMEX ebay store. They had them on "sale" a few times during December. The sales usually last a few days or when they sell out. Whichever may come first. I believe I picked up a tube for $368 the week before Christmas.

American Eagles are bullion, bullion is directly tied to the spot price of silver. Here is how it works. ASE's are only sold to Authorized Purchasers, of which there are only 11.APMEX is only online dealer I know of who is an AP. These are sold for $2 above spot. These are then sold to mid level purchasers at an additional profit, who in turn sell to us or an LCS for an additional profit over that. If someone is offering ASE's for $2 or less over spot, they are either lying, or bought a quantity when the spot price was substantially lower and are still making a profit. It is impossible to buy ASE's for $2 or under unless someone is taking a loss. $5 over is a good price from your LCS

Quote:It is impossible to buy ASE's for $2 or under unless someone is taking a loss. $5 over is a good price from your LCS $2 over deals are common. I've bought them there many times because spot price fluctuates all the time. I've paid as little as $1 over buying in quantity. Yesterday's $3 over can easily be tomorrow's $2 over and often is. Many dealers offer specials based on the hedge, you just have to watch for them. Paying $5 over spot for plain bullion ASEs is crazy. I've never paid more than $3 over and have bought and sold many thousands of ASEs in the last decade. Quote: I bought some on sale last from govmint.com. I actually learned about the deal on here. This sale was as low as $1 over before it was ended. I bought two tubes from them then.

Are most of you guys here buying silver as a hedge against some future inflation or disaster or as a flip? What is best way to buy it as a hedge? I am not smart enough to try and out guess bullion markets. I made some really bad flips in the past when I should have just been accumulating back in 2000.
