How Do You Cash Your Coins?

Dump the greedy banks. Go with credit unions, you are part owner. My best setup allowed me to direct-dump my coin loose in $500 bags. I got my cash immediately.

I re-roll my coins and bring them to Bank of America where I have an account.

I used to go the straightforward route by simply re-rolling each week's box of half dollars and then dropping it off at my bank. However, I was banned from bringing in any more boxes after just the 4th one (in as many weeks). Please bear in mind that this was/ is by no means a small local bank, but rather, one of the largest chain banks in town...

Now, I try to get rid of my excess half dollars by spending as many full rolls as possible. If I'm far enough away from my general "buying" area, I also cash out $100 at a time at more amenable banks. Needless to say, this general tactic limits my box purchases to about 1 a month now.

For spruett001 or anyone else, I like the imported candy from Germany, France, Belgium and Switzerland. They use real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup and chocolate from Africa not South America. I need to visit my bank this week, I'll pick up $25 in pennies. I'm feeling lucky.

I have several different banks and bank branches with limited coin vault space in my CRHing areas. As a result, if I desire to deposit several boxes of bulk coin at a branch I know has limited coin vault space, then I call-ahead and check on the availability of space in their coin vault to save myself a trip. This is only a small inconvenience for me. If the coin vault at one branch is "full", then the head teller will simply tell me. If this is the case, then I call another branch.

Bottom line: Our relationships with our banks are very important. The less we inconvenience the banks we use for ordering and depositing, the more likely we'll maintain good relationships and be able to continue to CRH.

They ship coins back to their parent bank or their Federal Reserve bank. Shipping costs money, which is why banks will charge fees for ordering or depositing boxes or other large amounts of coin.

Some coins are re-rolled and taken back to banks while others get spent. Half dollars are almost never taken back to the bank as that I like spending these. I sometimes dump these in the self-checkout at a Walmart Neighborhood Market that takes them, for purchases of $10 or so.

The candy thing just caught me off guard, but now that you mention it, that's sounds pretty delicious! Sorry, again.

I just received my Jefferson album and am scouting out the best place to get my first box considering I don't have a bank account at all. I think it must be some sort of a trust thing, but if I present a $100 bill and ask for nickels, why would I be denied? There are approximately 10 banks in the towns I frequent and the only repeat is the bank at Wal-mart, which I decided is not the most appropriate place to get boxes.

How important is it to CRH to have an account? Just curious...
