Hey all,

First time posting, and exciting to join the community! I collected coins when I was little for fun, and have always been on the look out for interesting things. I've had this odd quarter in my collection for a long time now, but never bothered to ask anyone about it, but now that I know a site like this exists, thought I'd see what you guys think.

Any idea of what's going on here with the year on this coin? Would you say this is a peculiar mint error or a mangled part of the coin? (It would seem difficult for just one little character to get mangled- and so perfectly smooshed, if so).

Totally perplexed!

Thanks!

The coin pictured is a quarter not a nickel. And it appears to be PMD

Hi Fuzzy,

Thank you so much for the quick response and critique! Wow, I'm quite a special one tonight haha.. sorry about that, not sure why I typed nickel, long day I guess :D

Anyway, interesting.. I wonder what kind of post-mint damage could cause such a clean mangle of a number into an unrecognizable character with unique seriffs and slopes. The odd shape seems so difficult to replicate with any kind of damage I can think of. Of course, I'm not a coin expert, so I'm probably just babbling to myself here haha.

I appreciate it! Cheers!

Edit: Subject and Original post corrected to include "quarter".

If there is a divot/hole behind the digit, it appears the coin was hit with something causing the metal to "squeeze out" to form the small v. The hit also caused the back of the 0 to be displaced.

Awesome, thank you for the insight there! I never would have thought. It's quite amazing how deep coin knowledge goes, it seems. :)

to the forum! After years of circulation pass from the original damage circulation wear will eventually smooth it all out and the original metal color contrast from the damage will also fade away
